Life

Graeme Williamson (1948 – 2020), AKA Shang-shang,  was born in Montreal to a Canadian mother and a British father. He was lead singer of Toronto band, the Pukka Orchestra, writing most of their songs. He moved permanently to Glasgow, Scotland when kidney and liver failure stopped him performing.  He gained an MA from Glasgow University, and an MLitt (Distinction) in Creative Writing. Graeme Williamson formed Pukka Orchestra in 1979 with Neil Chapman and Tony Duggan-Smith. The band’s name comes from the Hindu word meaning “first rate” or “genuine,” chosen when Duggan-Smith’s grandfather complained he wasn’t pursuing a real musical career but should join a pukka orchestra. Williamson wrote songs and fiction throughout his life. Graeme died in Glasgow with his wife Iris at his side.
